House Moving Service in Stellenbosch

You have signed the offer, the transfer date is circled on the fridge, and now there is one job standing between you and the new place: getting eighteen years of accumulated life from one address to another without breaking the good glassware.
Here is what most people underestimate about moving house in Stellenbosch. It is not the distance. Half the moves we do are under six kilometres. It is the access. Oak-lined streets that were laid out for ox wagons, heritage homes with staircases that turn twice, estates with boom gates and 48-hour access approval, and farm driveways that a five-ton truck has to reverse down because there is nowhere to turn.
That is the part a generic quote does not price in. This page explains how we run a house move in Stellenbosch, what it costs and why, and what you can do in the four weeks beforehand to make the day cheaper and shorter.
Moving House in Stellenbosch Is Not Like Moving Anywhere Else
Stellenbosch packs an unusual amount of variety into a small town. Within ten minutes of the Braak you have Cape Dutch heritage homes, 1970s family houses, student digs, luxury golf estates, farm cottages, and townhouse complexes with parking bays too narrow for a truck.
A moving crew that works mostly in Cape Town’s northern suburbs turns up expecting a driveway, a level entrance, and a place to park. In Mostertsdrift or lower Dorp Street they get none of the three. What follows is an hour of shuttling furniture down the pavement with a smaller vehicle, and an invoice that surprises everybody.
We plan around it instead. Every quote we give starts with the same two questions: what can we park, and how far is the walk from the vehicle to the front door. Get those right and the rest of the day runs on schedule.
What Our House Moving Service Includes
The Standard Move
Every house move we do includes the following as standard:
- A pre-move assessment, either on site or by video call, so the quote reflects your actual house
- Furniture blanket wrapping and shrink wrap on upholstery
- Disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture: beds, wardrobes with flat-pack fittings, dining tables, desks
- Loading, transport, and offloading into the correct rooms at the new address
- Protection of floors and door frames at both properties
- Transit cover against collision, fire and hijacking
Two crew members and a driver is our default for a two or three bedroom home. Larger homes get a bigger team rather than a longer day, because a move that runs past dark is a move where things get damaged.
Optional Add-Ons
- Full packing. We arrive the day before with boxes, paper and tape and pack the entire house. Most useful for kitchens, studies and anything glass. See our packing and wrapping service for what this covers.
- Partial packing. You do the clothes and books, we do the kitchen and the fragile items. This is the option most families choose.
- Storage gap cover. When your transfer dates do not line up and you need the load held for a few days.
- Single-item furniture transport. Handled separately through our furniture transportation service.

What We Do Not Do
Straight talk, because it saves everybody a phone call.
We do not do single-item moves as part of a house move booking. If you need one couch collected from a shop in the Eikestad Mall precinct and dropped at home, that is a furniture transport job, not a house move. Small moves are absolutely welcome, a bachelor flat with a bed, a fridge, a couch and eight boxes is a normal Tuesday for us, but there needs to be more than one item.
We also work within a 300km operating radius of the Cape Town area. Stellenbosch to Somerset West, Paarl, Franschhoek, Durbanville, Cape Town, Gordon’s Bay, Malmesbury and everything in between is squarely in range. A move to Gqeberha is not.
How Much Space Do You Actually Need?
The single biggest cause of a quote changing on the day is an underestimated load. Use this as a rough guide before you call anyone.
| Home size | Typical load | Crew | Realistic time (local move) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor flat or student digs | Half a 4-ton truck | 2 | 3 to 4 hours |
| 2 bedroom townhouse | Full 4-ton truck | 3 | 5 to 6 hours |
| 3 bedroom house | 8-ton truck | 3 to 4 | 7 to 8 hours |
| 4+ bedroom family home | 8-ton truck plus a return trip, or two vehicles | 4+ | Full day |
Add roughly an hour if either address has stairs and no lift. Add another hour if the truck cannot park within twenty metres of the front door. Add half a day if the garage is full, because garages are always fuller than people remember.
The Stellenbosch Suburb Guide: What Movers Run Into Where
Historic Centre and Universiteitsoord
Dorp Street, Church Street, Bird Street, Andringa Street. Beautiful, and operationally the hardest part of town. Street parking is metered and tight, the oaks limit truck height on some stretches, and many of the older homes have narrow entrance halls with a hard right turn immediately inside the front door.
What we do differently here: we scout parking before the day, we bring extra door frame protection, and we budget for a shuttle vehicle if the truck genuinely cannot get close. Heritage homes also tend to have original yellowwood floors, which we cover rather than risk.
Die Boord, Paradyskloof and Brandwacht
Easier ground. Wider streets, driveways, generally single storey or a straightforward staircase. Paradyskloof adds a gradient factor, which matters less for access and more for how we load, keeping the heavy items low and forward.
Complexes off Blaauwklippen Road and around Stellenbosch Square often have visitor parking restrictions. Worth confirming with your body corporate a week ahead.
Welgevonden, Kleine Zalze and the Estates
Estates are the most predictable moves once you are inside and the most frustrating if the paperwork is not done. Most require vehicle and crew details submitted in advance, some restrict moving activity to certain hours, and a few do not permit heavy vehicles on certain internal roads at all.
We handle the submission if you give us the estate’s contact details when you book. Do not leave this to the morning of the move.
Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Jamestown
Straightforward residential moves, though street width and parked cars mean the truck often stops short of the gate. We plan for a longer carry rather than pretending it will not happen.
Farm and Smallholding Moves
Vlottenburg, Lynedoch, Raithby, the Bottelary Road area, the smallholdings off Annandale Road and Polkadraai Road. Gravel access roads, gates that need a key nobody can find, and turning circles that do not exist.
Two things we ask for on farm moves: a photo of the driveway entrance, and confirmation that the gate will be open and someone will be on site. During harvest, February through April, we also build extra time into the schedule for tractor and truck traffic on the R310 and Bottelary Road.
Timing Your Move: Stellenbosch Has Bad Weeks
Stellenbosch runs on a university calendar, and that creates predictable congestion.
Late January and early February is the worst window in the year. Student intake fills every available vehicle in town and pushes prices up everywhere. If you have any flexibility, avoid it.
Late November through mid December is the second crunch, combining end of academic year with the holiday move rush and transfer dates that everyone wants before the festive shutdown.
The last three working days of any month are always busier than the rest, because lease dates cluster there.
Best value windows: mid-month, mid-week, outside the two peaks above. A Tuesday in May costs meaningfully less than a Friday in late January, for identical work.
We operate Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. Booking two to three weeks ahead is comfortable. Booking during a peak window needs four to six.
The 4-Week Stellenbosch Moving Checklist
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| 4 weeks out | Book your mover. Start a “sell or donate” pile. Confirm transfer or lease dates in writing. |
| 3 weeks out | Notify municipality for utilities transfer, plus medical aid, bank, school and insurers. Submit estate or complex access paperwork. |
| 2 weeks out | Start packing non-essentials: books, decor, out-of-season clothing, garage. Label every box by room, not by contents. |
| 1 week out | Pack everything except a week’s essentials. Defrost the freezer. Confirm parking at both addresses. Arrange care for pets and small children on the day. |
| 2 days out | Pack an “open first” box: kettle, mugs, tea, toilet paper, phone chargers, medication, bedding, a torch. |
| Moving day | Be on site for the walkthrough at both ends. Keep valuables and documents with you personally. |
One unique tip that saves real money: photograph the inside of every cupboard before you pack it. When you cannot find the spare key or the router password three days later, you will have it.
How to Choose a Moving Service in Stellenbosch
Searching “moving service near me” gives you a long list and very little to separate one from the next. Four questions do most of the filtering:
- Will you quote after seeing the house, or only over the phone? A phone quote on a three bedroom home is a guess, and guesses get revised upward on the day.
- What is covered while my furniture is on the truck? Ask specifically. Ours covers collision, fire and hijacking. Vague answers here are a red flag.
- Are the crew your employees or day labour? Trained crew wrap furniture properly. Day labour picked up that morning does not.
- Can you give me a written breakdown? Vehicle, crew, hours, materials, travel. A single lump sum with no detail is difficult to compare and easy to inflate.
What It Costs and Why Quotes Differ
There is no honest flat rate for a house move, and anyone who gives you one over the phone in sixty seconds is either guessing or planning to renegotiate on the day.
Local Stellenbosch moves are priced on vehicle size, crew size, and time. Longer moves, say Stellenbosch to Durbanville or Gordon’s Bay, add distance and travel time. What moves the number most is usually not the distance at all. It is the volume, the stairs, and the walk from truck to door.
Two identical three bedroom homes, one in Die Boord with a driveway and one on Dorp Street with metered street parking, are not the same job and should not carry the same price.
For a firm number, our get a quote page takes about two minutes, or you can call and we will arrange an assessment. We cover Stellenbosch and the surrounding towns, and the full list is on our areas we serve page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ready to Book Your Move?
A Stellenbosch house move done properly is a boring day. The truck fits, the crew knows where the stairs turn, the boxes are labelled by room, and you are drinking coffee in the new kitchen by late afternoon.
That comes from planning, not luck.
Tell us the two addresses, the number of bedrooms, and your target date, and we will come back with a proper written quote. Use the request a quote form or get in touch directly.
